Oracy

Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language.

At Cranford Park Academy, we strongly believe that  oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching children to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a way in which all children can feel empowered to find their voice to succeed in school and further on in life. 

Through a high quality Oracy education children can develop and deepen their subject knowledge and understanding through talk in the classroom, which has been planned, designed, modelled, scaffolded and structured to enable them to learn the skills needed to talk effectively. We do this through a number of ways such as the use of Scholar Sentences to encourage the use of academic language in the classroom, planned speaking and listening activities, debate club, Talk Tasks across the Wider Curriculum and much more!

Poetry is, at its heart, an oral tradition and is therefore a great context for children to hone and develop their Oracy skills. At Cranford Park Academy, we celebrate Poetry Week as well as teaching Poetry from Reception to Year 6. Our children have the opportunity to learn about different poets and styles of Poetry, as well as performing them too. Check out some of our performances below!
